Welcome back to The Worldsee. In our #IFGeography series, we have pushed mountains into the stratosphere and transformed Antarctica into the White Sahara. Today, we leave the ice behind and return to the cradle of human civilization, only to erase its defining feature: the Mediterranean Sea.
Roughly 5.9 million years ago, tectonic movements sealed the Strait of Gibraltar, cutting off the Mediterranean from the Atlantic Ocean. Under the intense sun, the sea completely evaporated, leaving behind a 5-kilometer-deep basin of salt. This was known as the Messinian Salinity Crisis.
Today, we are resurrecting this apocalyptic event and making it permanent. Let’s explore the terrifying geography and climate of the Messinian Abyss—a 2.5 million square kilometer canyon separating Europe and Africa, standing as the deepest, hottest, and heaviest environment on land.
1. The Pressure Cooker: A New Atmospheric Layer
When you drain an ocean that is up to 5,000 meters (16,400 feet) deep, the atmosphere rushes in to fill the void. The most profound feature of the Messinian Abyss is not the salt; it is the air itself.
The Heavy Sky: At 5 kilometers below normal sea level, the atmospheric pressure is roughly 1.5 to 1.7 times higher than what we experience at the beach. The air here is physically thick, heavy, and rich in trapped oxygen and carbon dioxide. Breathing would feel like inhaling warm syrup.
Adiabatic Heating: As wind from the African Sahara or the European Alps sinks into the abyss, the immense atmospheric pressure compresses the air, rapidly heating it up (adiabatic heating). This turns the bottom of the basin into a literal pressure cooker. During the summer months, average temperatures on the abyssal floor routinely exceed 65°C to 75°C (150°F - 165°F). It is an oven that would instantly kill an unprotected human.
2. The Architecture of Salt: The Evaporite Desert
Drying up the Mediterranean doesn't leave behind a sandy desert; it leaves behind the concentrated remains of an entire ocean.
The Halite Badlands: The abyssal floor is a blinding, alien expanse of evaporite minerals. Kilometers-thick layers of halite (rock salt) and gypsum form jagged, crystalline badlands that stretch to the horizon. As the extreme heat causes the salt to expand and buckle, it creates razor-sharp pressure ridges and hollow, echoing salt caves that collapse without warning.
The Brine Purgatory: At the absolute lowest points of the abyss, scattered "lakes" remain. However, these are not made of water. They are hyper-saline, toxic brine pools heavily laced with magnesium and sulfur. These pools are so dense with dissolved minerals that they never boil, even at 75°C, emitting a constant, suffocating sulfurous haze into the thick air.
3. The Mega-Cataracts: Rivers Falling into the Void
While the sea is gone, the rivers of Europe and Africa—the Rhone, the Po, the Nile—have not stopped flowing. When they reach the edge of the former continental shelf, they face a 5,000-meter vertical drop into the abyss.
The Virga Falls: These rivers create the largest waterfalls in planetary history, dwarfing Angel Falls and Niagara combined. However, because the bottom of the abyss is a 75°C high-pressure oven, the water rarely reaches the ground. As the continental rivers plunge over the cliffs, they are atomized by the thick air and instantly vaporized by the heat halfway down.
The Mid-Air Storms: This massive, constant vaporization creates permanent, floating storm systems suspended 2,000 meters above the canyon floor. These localized storms unleash violent lightning and rain down boiling, salty water that evaporates again before ever touching the salt flats below, creating a surreal phenomenon known as virga.

The Messinian Abyss is a monument to planetary extremes. It is a world where the air is thick and heavy, the ground is a jagged, blinding mirror of toxic salt, and continental rivers vaporize in mid-air before hitting an oven baked at 75°C. It forms an absolute, impassable barrier of heat and pressure between Europe and Africa.
