Welcome back to The Worldsee. In our #IFGeography series, we have expanded isolated islands and manipulated mountain ranges, but today, we undertake our most ambitious planetary engineering project yet. We are looking at the bottom of the world: Antarctica.

In our reality, Antarctica is covered by an ice sheet over two miles thick, containing 70% of the planet's fresh water. However, there is a tiny, alien anomaly on the continent known as the McMurdo Dry Valleys. Due to extreme wind patterns and a rain shadow, these valleys have not seen rain or ice for millions of years, resembling the surface of Mars more than Earth.

But what if we expanded this anomaly? Let’s explore a speculative scenario: The entire Antarctic continent (14 million square kilometers) is stripped of its ice cap and transformed into a permanent, hyper-arid, ice-free desert. In this post, we explore the terrifying geography of a continent-sized freezer with absolutely zero precipitation.


1. The Great Rebound: A Continent Lifted


The most immediate geographical change is invisible to the naked eye but catastrophic in scale. The current Antarctic ice sheet weighs roughly 24 quadrillion tons, physically crushing the continental bedrock below sea level.

  • Isostatic Rebound: In our Dry Valley scenario, without the crushing weight of the ice, the entire continent experiences isostatic rebound. The bedrock violently springs upward over millennia. Antarctica becomes the highest continent on Earth on average, a towering, jagged landmass of naked stone thrusting into the freezing atmosphere.

Walking across this terrain would be like navigating a labyrinth of razor-sharp stone.


3. The Abyssal Salt Flats: The Dead Seas of the South 


Because this is a Dry Valley scenario, there is no rain, and there is no melting ice. So what happens to the massive sub-glacial lakes, like Lake Vostok, that currently exist beneath the ice?

  • The Hyper-Saline Basins: As the ice vanishes and the continent dries out, these deep basins are exposed to the brutal, arid winds. The water rapidly evaporates, leaving behind massive depressions.

  • The Toxic Playas: These former lakes become continent-sized salt flats. But unlike the white salt flats of Bolivia, the Antarctic playas are deeply stained by heavy metals and ancient, concentrated minerals, creating vast, toxic basins of blood-red and oxidized-orange salt. They are the driest, most hostile dead zones on the planet, where the ground crackles and shifts under the extreme cold.
